What It Means To Foster

By opening up your heart and home to a foster dog or cat, you are removing them from the shelter environment and allowing them to flourish while they prepare to meet their future families.

As a foster-based dog and cat rescue, our goal is to get dogs and cats out of shelter, but our hope is that one day we won’t have to! We imagine a world where shelters are empty because each pet has a loving home. Until that vision becomes a reality, we will continue working with our community and making fostering and adopting accessible to all. This allows us to save thousands of dogs and cats each year.

Working with Sutter Animal Services

ResQpaws works directly with Sutter Animal Services shelter to bring pets that need a little more time or are scared or sick into our rescue.

Shelters and foster-based rescues are just two sides of the same lifesaving coin. Shelters house adoptable pets in a centralized location where they receive care and enrichment before they are adopted. Foster-based rescues work with shelters and other sources to take in homeless pets and place them with fosters before they are adopted. Since shelters tend to be very stressful for the pets living in them, placing a pet in foster care allows them to relax in a home environment and show their true personality so that adopters have a better idea of what their pet will be like when they bring them home. While some foster-based rescues have brick-and-mortar locations, ResQpaws does not.

Because we are a foster-based rescue with no physical shelter, we only have the capacity to save as many dogs as we have foster parents. When you become a foster parent with ResQpaws, you will personally be saving the life of a dog or cat who might have otherwise not received a second chance.

Who Can Foster and What Fostering Entails

All foster applicants must be 21 years of age or older and live within one hour of the Yuba-Sutter area and be able to transport to vet appointments, if necessary.  We can help in this regard if you are local to Yuba-Sutter area.

Our foster parents begin with a short orientation to review the basics of fostering a dog or cat. All foster parents are requested to join our private supportive online Facebook community of foster parents. A short home visit to check backyard fencing and gates is required for dog fosters.

Every foster parent is matched with a foster buddy--a seasoned volunteer member of our foster team--for one-on-one support.

ResQpaws provides everything you need: food, crates, blankets, bowls, toys and all vet care.  You provide lots of love.

ResQpaws matches you with a foster dog/cat based on your preference for age/breed/size. Our ultimate goal is to find the best foster home for our dogs/cats in need.

ResQpaws has weekly adoption events at Yuba City PetSmart from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Once your foster dog is spayed/neutered and has all shots and testing, we do require volunteers and dog fosters to attend at least one adoption event a month, more if possible.  It really is the best way to get your foster dog adopted.

ResQpaws cats are fostered in homes and once spayed/neutered and have all shots and testing, they are housed at PetSmart for adoption and/or networked on our various sites to help get them adopted.
